Lt. Robert H. Dee, Jr.'s Diary
Co-Pilot, 601st Squadron

Dee's Mission No.
7

5 December 1944
Target:
Munitions Factory
Berlin, Germany

No .7
Dec. 5, 1944

The target was Berlin. I was really scared. We carried 6X500 GP’s and 4X500 Incendaries. The target was a munitions factory on the NE corner. We flew all the way there and back without any flak or fighters. Bassingbourn (12 O’Clock High was made here) got hit bad by flak. The Grace of God was with us on that mission. Ninety-one fighters were shot down.

Editor's Notes:

  1. "Bassingbourn got hit bad by flak" most likely was the 91st Bomb Group that was based in Bassingbourn.
  2. The diary item "12 O’Clock High was made here" is thought to have been added by Robert's wife when she typed the diary years later as the movie was made in 1949.

Notes:
  • Lt. Robert H. Dee, Jr. was the regular Co-Pilot for the Byron L. Magness 601st Crew. On occasion, he flew with other crews.
