T/Sgt. Armand Fugge's Diary
Engineer/Top Turret Gunner 600th Squadron

Fugge Mission No.
23

16 July 1944
Target:
Warehouses, Munich, Germany

July 16, 1944
Got up at 0030. Briefed at 0200 and our target was Munich, Germany again. This one made three for us there in four days. Carried 6 – 500 lb. incendiaries and 4 – 500 Lb. G.P.’s.

Hit contrails close to the target area and climbed to 29,400 ft. still we could not see our wing man. Bombs were dropping everywhere and the whole wing broke up. We could only see the flak that was exploding real close and from that it must have heavy. We had 10/10 contrail undercast.

Lt. Lovelace, our left wing man got hit and the whole crew bailed out over the target. Their Fort went into a tailspin and both wings were ripped off as it went down.

We turned south and after 40 minutes of blind flying we finally got out of the contrails and found ourself alone. We flew all the way back to England alone. Our group got hit by fighters and we were fortunate not to be there. No planes lost from fighters. I think these Munich raids are only terror raids judging from the way we’re briefed. Landed at 1430.

The group has 50 missions completed today.

Sent Peg the plexiglass cross I finally finished. It looks pretty good.

MISSION # 23 COMPLETED.
