Non Mission Days

August 9, 1944:
Slept late. The boys hit Stuttgart, Germany today. None lost. I got stuck with guard duty on the planes tonight.

August 10, 1944
Slept late and just killed the day. Had guard from 2100 to 0115.

August 11, 1944
Slept late. Got paid 16 pounds 19 shillings. Made a slingshot and started a squadron fad. I got the D.F.C. today. Gee it’s a nice looking medal. Stood guard again.

August 12, 1944
Slept late. The boys hit an airfield southwest of Paris. Lost Searl’s crew. Their plane crashed in England before the mission then exploded. They were all killed so that ended the career of the “Tomahawk Warriors “ their combat name. That makes eight crews lost from our squadron so far out of eighteen. Our plane losses, to date, are 11 out of 18. We have seven originals left. Played ball most of the afternoon. My pilot left for the States today. I don’t know when I’ll be leaving. Don sure has been a swell guy to us all.

August 13, 1944
Slept till 1000. Went to mass. Killed the rest of the day trying to get a suntan. The boys hit France today close to the coast. Our group had lost 2 planes.

August 14, 1944
Slept late. Spent afternoon trying to increase my slight tan but the sun doesn’t seem to do much good. Noble, Berkie and Moon are going back to the States tomorrow.

August 15, 1944
Slept late. The boys hit Cologne today in “Flack Happy Valley”, The Ruhr. No planes lost. Dom flew today. New crews came in. Spent the afternoon in the sun working on plexiglass.

August 16, 1944
Slept late. The boys hit Leipzig, Germany today. No planes lost. The 91st bomb group lost 13 planes on the same raid. 7 from one squadron.

August 17, 1944
Slept late. I got transferred from the squadron area to battle station headquarters.

August 18, 1944
Slept late. Started to read “Fighting Caravans“ by Zan Grey.

August 19, 1944
Slept late and just killed the day.

August 20, 1944
Slept late. Killed the day reading.

August 21, 1944
Slept late. Finished reading Zan Grey’s “U.P. Trail “. I saw "The Cross of Lorrain” at the theater.

32 COMBAT MISSIONS 240 combat hours. Arrived in England 4/25/44. Arrived in U.S.A. 9/8/44. Time flying home Scotland to Washington, D.C. – 23 hours.
