Mission: Osnabruck, Germany

We bombed locomotive and gun works visually at 28,000 feet. We had a very good bomb strike. The temperature was - 52 degrees. We were airborne 6-1/2 hours with 3-1/2 hours on oxygen. We encountered moderate, intense flak, but encountered no battle damage. I saw one of our P-51 fighter escort go down in flames. The pilot bailed out. Two of our planes were hit by flak, and one of them exploded. No one was able to get out of that plane, but the crew of another B-17 bailed out.
