Mission: Munster, Germany
We bombed the citys marshalling yards PFF at 25,000 feet, and did not get good results. The temperature was 46 degrees. There was no flak at all, but we met FW-190 fighter opposition. This was the most exciting moments of my life when I had the enemys plane in my ring sight, and I was firing at him. There were 24 or 30 of them, and 15 of them made passes at our formation. The rest of the enemy planes were holding off our fighter escort, which came to our assistance right away. I saw two enemy planes explode from our formations 50 calibers guns. I put in a claim on a probable hit that went down smoking, and later in flames, but all of us took credit. This was my first enemy fighter attack, and I have hopes that its the last. My plane was one of the few returning on schedule. Other planes had aborted before we reached the target due to engine failure. Our plane had a few 20 mm cannon holes in our wing from the FW-190s 20 mm guns.
