Mission: Nurnberg, Germany

Hastings flew deputy squadron lead and had to take over when the lead aborted. We bombed marshalling yards on PFF by our radar operator on the plane at 26,000 feet. We were airborne 8-1/2 hours, 4 hours on oxygen. The temperature was –48 degrees. We encountered light to moderate flak; therefore no battle damage. Lt. Hastings did a wonderful job as lead pilot, and our navigator, Burch brought us around all the heavy flak areas. The bomb strike was reported very good, and Hastings was congratulated on his fine job of leading the formation. It was a good mission all the way through. We have been made “lead crew” and Hastings is now a 1st Lt.
