S/Sgt. Chilton H. Jorgenson's Diary
Ball Turret Gunner 601st Squadron

Jorgenson's Mission No.
1

6 May 1944
Target:
Sottevast, France

Mission # 1
May 6th 1944

The big day for our group. Our first combat mission, flew ship #096 to Sottevast, France. Time 4 hours 15 minutes. We saw flak for the first time but our biggest worry was fighters because we hadn’t any guns. Armament could not find the bolt studs for our guns. Lt. Gustoves told us to take the guns on the ramp and leave them. Some ships got hit by flack but we didn’t. From now on this diary is going to stick to missions.
