S/Sgt. Chilton H. Jorgenson's Diary
Ball Turret Gunner 601st Squadron

Jorgenson's Mission No.
11

13 June 1944
Target:
Airfield, Beauvais, France

Mission # 11
June 13, 1944

A supposedly milk run but almost finish for this crew. Hit the airfield at Beauvais, France. Time 5 hours.

On our return went over the town of Rouen, France. Flak was light but very accurate. One shot hit 3 planes but we were nearest the explosion in fact it was just a little below and to the left of our tail. S/Sgt. Wm. Sichting our tail gunner was hit with a piece of flak went thru his flak helmet and put a gash in the back of his head. Flak also hit the ammunition in the tail and exploded it tossing ammo and ammo boxes all over. Our rudder was shot out of control. Also Duff in the waist had a close call. Altogether we had 69 flak holes from our left waist gun window to the tail. Genung and Jack landed the ship down good, for not having any rudder. Bill spent one night in the hospital and was back with us the next day.
