T/Sgt. Armand Fugge's Diary
Engineer/Top Turret Gunner 600th Squadron

Fugge Mission No.
22

13 July 1944
Target:
Aircraft Engine Plan, Munich, Germany

July 13, 1944
Got up at 0200 and briefed at 0300. Our target was Munich, Germany. It was the same aircraft plant. I guess we didn’t do very good yesterday. Carried 6 – 500 lb. incendiaries and 4 – 500 lb. G.P.’s. Flew the same route in and bombed from 24,000 ft. through 8/10 undercast.

The wing ahead of us and the wing behind us got hit by fighters. I guess we were flying a tight formation so they didn’t bother us. Saw three Forts go down from the wing ahead of us. Flak was heavy and accurate. A Fort in our second element got a direct hit in the bomb bay. It exploded and went down in flames. This happened a fraction of a second before I was going to take a picture of the forward element. I crushed my camera when I saw it happen. No one got out. Landed at 1500.

MISSION # 22 COMPLETED. Safely, Thank God. 10 more to go.
