  10. Interpretive Comments: The B-17 in this photograph is on the tarmac at Nuthampstead.
    1. The nose was painted black. Evidently it had flown through some nasty stuff, like napalm, and it was causing some corrosion to the nose area, so it was painted in order the stop the corrosion.
    2. There are at least 13 small bombs painted under the co-pilot's window. These represent the number of missions the plane had flown by the date of the photograph.
    3. One engine is labled Ellen. This is the name of that particular engine and not the plane, which was the Bronx Bomber II.
