  2. S/Sgt. Lewis A. Puthoff, Waist Gunner

Notes:

  1. S/Sgt. Bernard P. Jaruszewski and S/Sgt. Lewis A. Puthoff were part of the original Cullinan crew.
  2. On this particular day, Captain Bob Hopkins was the CA which shifted Captain Cullinan to the co-pilot seat and 2nd Lt. John Hobbs to the tailgunner position for formation control. This may explain why one of the Cullinan gunners was not with the crew that day.

  1. Original Crew No. 67
  2. 398th Mission No. 52, Lechfeld, Germany, 19 July 1944
  3. On this mission the Cullinan crew flew High Group Lead
  4. Aircraft flown: 42-102553 N7-K, "LIL' 8 BALL". This A/C hit tractor on takeoff 26 July 1944.
  5. Jeff Vicha provided the following excerpt from an early 1944 Ray Vicha letter "...our ex co-pilot Cullinan named his plane The Railroader after his father who died last year..." Ray Vicha and Cullinan were part of the original Hopkins' crew in Rapid City. In early 1944, Cullinan got his own crew and was replaced by Ed Jordan on the Hopkins' Crew. Thus it appears that the Cullinan Crew on the day of the photo above wanted their photo taken in front of their original Rapid City aircraft and not the one they flew the day of the photo.
